UK Immigration – Students (Tier 4)
There are basically five recognised types of student visas that you can apply for if you want to come to the UK to study as a Student. These are:
Tier 4 (Child) Student: This applies to children aged between 4 and 17 who intend to come to the UK to study. Note however that if you are between 4 and 15 years old, your education in the UK must be undertaken at an independent fee-paying school. Note also that depending on your circumstances and course of studies, if you are aged between 16 and 17 it might be more appropriate for you to apply under Tier 4 (General) instead of as a Child Student. We will be able to advise you of the most appropriate option for you after assessing your situation.
Tier 4 (General) student: This is the most popular group within the Tier 4 category of the points-based system. This category applies to adult students aged 16 and over who wish to undertake their post-16 education in the UK. This covers adult students who want to study at Universities and other Colleges in the UK. Application under this category can be made both from within and outside the UK.
Student Visitor: If you are 18 years old or over and intend to come to the UK to undertake a course of study lasting not more than 6 months, and you do not intend to work while you are in the UK you can apply as a student visitor. If you come to the UK as a Student visitor you will not be permitted to switch to the Tier 4 (General) student category while you are in the UK as a student visitor.
Child visitor: If you are aged 17 years or under and you want to come to the UK to undertake a course of study lasting no more than 6 months, you will need to apply as a child visitor. You will not be permitted to switch to the Tier 4 (Child) student category while you are in the UK as a child visitor. In which case you will need to return to your country in order make an application for a Tier 4 (Child) student visa.
Prospective Student: You can apply as a prospective student if you want to come to the UK to help you decide which course to study, or if you plan to start a course of study within 6 months. You will be able to switch and apply for a Tier 4 (General) or Tier 4 (Child) student visa while you are in the UK
